Yes, I said it castor oil. “If you don’t do as your told your going to get a heaping spoon of castor oil.” Was a threat hear by many a child in times gone by; now it would be”I’m going to take away your video game player or no cell phone for a week.”

But besides punishment castor oil like so many natural products has benefits that are just as useful today as they where then. Castor oil has had it’s advocates and it’s detractors over the years but when dealing with any herb it is best to understand what you are working with or stay out of the kitchen.

First of all castor oil is not to be made in the home as castor beans themselves carry a deadly toxin which is left behind when the oil is extracted via specific pressing. See wikipedia under castor oil for more details on the bean.

The oil befret of the toxins provided a variety uses to the people of olden times and even not that long ago a man named, Edgar Cayce, suggested time and time again castor oil for a variety of aliments.

What we know of:

Castor Oil:

Any body up for a parasite or would you prefer a cleanse?

It seems there are some quite good herbs for the elimination of parasites but caution is recommended as quite a few, including some surprises, are toxic at higher doses, cause massive purging or can leave you feeling completely ill depending on the amount of poisons left by the dead and dying parasites.

There are sereral commercial remedies for parasitic infestation and Some interesting Books on the subject. Dr Clark’s “The Cure for All Cancers”. I found it fascinating. But not as much as I’m finding “The Cure for all Diseases” by the same author, Dr Hulda Clark. She seems to have had an impact on the herbal market. Fungalbionics is another interesting group to read.

One of the most unpopular but effective cures for parasitic in festation was said to caster oil and onions or sulfer. This age old practice has fallen to the wayside much to the pleasure of unknowing generations of children. But it appeared to have it’s place.

The Castor Bean is the source of the oil that use to grace the shelf of every pharmacy. Now where has it gone? Castor Oil the oil comes from the pressing of the seeds and being a cathartic it was a commonly used purgative, a non chemical laxative that didn’t taste or look anything like chocolate. Here is a place for caution if you can find it the should be safe but the whole plant contains an irratant that can poison the blood. The oil is reputed to be safe because the irritant remains in the seed. It may depend on the process used never the less a caution sign!

Dr. Clark’s method involves amongst other things three herbs as her primarily ingredients. Wormwood, cloves, and the ripe green hull of the black walnut.

Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) flowering tops and leaves, are said to have the following qualities:

Anthelmintic

Antiseptic

Antispasmodic

Carminative

Cholagogue

Febrifuge

Stimulant

Stomach

I would like to start with are one of the most famous and yet at the same time least known herbs in Canada.

Essiac

What is Essiac?

Is Essiac effective against disease or cancer?

Is it only available from one particuliar company handed down by it creator and signed sealed and delivered into other hands?

Is just a great tasting tea that if you make it yourself is inexpensive but if bought from the store sells typically for about thirty bucks a bottle from the registered maker?

Is it worth the time and trouble to bother making it yourself?

Is it really only four simple herbs that are still readily available?

Is there so much information on the internet about Essiac that you have a hard time getting to the real facts?

Whose Essiac is the Truth? Is there a Truth? Are the new versions better with more herbs?

Ok that’s more then enough questions to start…

The Story so far. With a little investigation something like what follows (and multiple variations) can easily be found.

First of all Essiac is said to be the combination of four herbs. They are burdock root, indian/turkey rhubarbroot , sheep sorrel/sorrel herb, and the inner bark of the slippery elm.

It is written in various places on the internet that one has but to take a certain measure of each herb and combine them thoroughly.

Perhaps if 6 and 1/2 cups of burdock root (cut) were added to 16 oz. of sheep sorrel/sorrel herb (powdered) and that with 1 oz. of indian/turkey rhubarb root (powdered) then finally adding 4 oz of slippery elm inner bark (powdered). If this concoction was then added to sodium-free distilled water that had reached a rolling boil in a 5 gallon stainless steel pot and the lid were left on for ten minutes while boiling. It could make a mess. If the stove were turned off and the mess on the inside of the potwere scraped with a stainless steel spatula into the mix and all was thoroughly mixed. The lid could be left on leaving the pot to sit for 12 hours only to then have the stove turned to full heat for 20 minutes. At this point the stove could be easily turned off. Straining the liquid in a 3 gallon stainless steel pot would not be overly unusual and then after the original pot and strainer were cleaned it would be good to perhaps starin it back into that pot. A funnel would be an excellent way to pour the hot liquid into amber tinted glass bottles (caution Hot liquid and glass must be handled with care as glass can easily shatter) immediately insuring caps are tightenedand then tightened again when bottles cool. Refrigerating the brew and keeping unless mold forms, causing it to be discarded. The internet advises that after heating 4 tablespoons (2 oz.) of this same sodium free distilled water in a stainless steel pot, this concoction could be added to make this apparently tasty brew called Essiac.

So that is a typical bit of Essiac internet.

Now what do we know about the Herbs themselves?

Burdock Root (Artium lappa) root is reputed to have the following qualities:

Aperient

Cholagogue

Diaphoretic

Diuretic

Sheep Sorrel (Rumex Acetosella), herb is said to provide the following actions:

Astrigent

Diuretic

Laxative

Slipper Elm (Ulmus fulva), inner bark apparently possess these qualities:

Demulcent

Diurectic

Emollient

Indian Rhubarb (Rheum palmatum), root is also reputed to have certain functions:

Appetizer

Astrigent

Purgative

Tonic

What can be said about the preparation presented here.

It sounds much like an infusion, a tea.

An infusion is the combination of plants with boiling water reguarded as an excellent way to extract the plants active ingredients with minimal loss of volatile elements. Usually the heated water is poured over the plants but variations include adding plants to boiling water with their immediate or imminent removal from the heat source. Regardless, steeping the brew is of great importance, typically ten minutes or longer is suggested. Natural (glass or enamal) or inert (stainless steel) materials are recommended for the boiling and steeping processes. And organic herbs are obviously preferable to herbs that have been feed on chemical fertilizers and covered in pesticide protections. Don’t even bother asking about genetically altered herbs!

I am coming to the end of my steam for tonight please if there is anybody out there that has encountered Essiac I welcome your comments..

As always “Mind the Cobwebs” they tend to take over in unused areas of the home or brain.

Until the next time:

Question what you know and what you don’t but for your own sake seek the answers!

Good Night!

By T

I just want to say in my own opinion, taking into consideration the fact that there is such a controversy about the whole Essiac thing and it being nothing but a herbal tea, well if I was diagnosed with cancer I would be trying quite a few things and many herbal teas taste great. I personally have never tried Essiac. I have tried Flor-Essence by the company Flora, which has the same herbs plus a few others and is at least 81% organic as per the label, and found it to be mild tasting and will buy it again. Even considering the cost of these products or the time consumption if you make them from scratch it’s still a whole lot better then dead. Who wouldn’t want to be able to say “it tastes great and it works!”

“The Everchanging Realms of Information Abound just take a Moment and Look Around. We that observe cause change and we that change must observe!” from T.

Well I’d like to say that I know all there is to know about Herbs but in fifteen plus years dealing with plants I still feel as if I’ve only scratched the surface so to speak. I will content myself in saying that I know what I know. And to knowanything I must always be learning which requires that I must always have an open mind (not so far that the brains fallout- skepticism is the mother of survival) to appraise the info and draw a reasonable if always personal opinionon any subject.

Yes opinion there is truly no scientific facts only observed phenomenon something that we tend to forget from time to time. Yes even peer reviewed double blind clinical trials are jaded by the only true scientific fact – any interference, including observation, alters the results. Yes I know I’m opinionated that’s why I wrote this.

That being said since each one of us is different not only in who we are but also in were and how we live (aka survive), work and enjoy (aka prosper) – we also vary in how we react to all things from food to emotions to the world at large or just to asprin vs. ibuprofen. How can any but ourself know us best, unless of course if we don’t bother to pay attention. Free of cost but so time consuming and so once more into the dirt my friends once more into the loam.

Disclaimer*
